Each patient is assessed individually, with treatment planned carefully to ensure complete removal of the cancer while achieving the best possible functional and cosmetic result.

Common Skin Cancers

  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
  • Early melanoma (assessment and onward referral where appropriate)
  • Suspicious skin lesions
  • Changing moles
  • Non-healing ulcers
  • Benign facial lesions requiring assessment or removal

Assessment & Diagnosis

Assessment involves careful examination of the lesion and surrounding skin. Where appropriate, a biopsy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Further investigations are arranged if required. All findings are explained clearly, and patients are supported in understanding the diagnosis and next steps.

Surgical Treatment

Surgical treatment is carried out with the aim of complete removal of the cancer while preserving both function and appearance.
Particular care is taken when operating on high-risk areas of the face such as the nose, eyelids, lips and ears, where reconstruction may be required. Procedures are planned carefully and tailored to each individual, with attention to both oncological safety and cosmetic outcome. All surgery is followed by appropriate aftercare and review to monitor healing and outcomes.

Reconstruction Following Surgery

Following removal of the skin cancer, reconstruction may be required to support healing and restore appearance.
This may involve techniques such as local skin flaps or skin grafts, selected carefully based on the size and location of the surgical site. Reconstruction is planned thoughtfully for each individual to achieve a balanced and natural result wherever possible.

Multidisciplinary Care

Complex cases are discussed within the Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team to ensure that treatment plans reflect current best practice. This collaborative approach ensures coordinated and comprehensive care.

When to Seek Advice

You may wish to seek specialist assessment if you notice a skin lesion that is changing in appearance, not healing, bleeding, or causing concern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the entire cancer be removed?

The aim of surgery is complete removal of the tumour with appropriate margins. Where necessary, cases are discussed within the Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team to ensure safe and effective treatment.

Will there be a visible scar?

All surgical procedures on the skin result in a scar. Incisions are planned carefully and reconstruction is tailored to support appropriate healing. During consultation, you will receive clear guidance on expected healing and anticipated appearance.

Will I need general anaesthetic?

Many facial skin cancers can be treated safely under local anaesthetic. General anaesthetic may be recommended depending on tumour size, location and complexity. This will be discussed clearly during consultation.
